Floyd Mayweather has no problem making his point clear.
The legendary undefeated former boxing champion has never hesitated to let the world of combat sports know where he stands in his career.
Mayweather, 45, is coming off a victory over Mikuru Asakura in an exhibition bout at the Super RIZIN title in Saitama, Japan. In the year It was his fourth exhibition bout since retiring from professional boxing in 2017 at 50-0.
At Super RIZIN’s post-fight news conference, Mayweather was asked if he would fight former rival Manny Pacquiao, who was at the meeting. Mayweather says he won’t fight Pacquiao or any top boxer – only YouTubers or MMA fighters.
“I retired from the sport, and I didn’t let the sport retire me,” Mayweather said. I always put myself in my place, like me – to fight at the highest level. I was in charge and in control.
“I’m not going in there with ex-fighters, ex-world champions, putting more abuse on my body. I retired for a reason. I’m here to have fun and enjoy myself – sometimes three rounds, sometimes eight rounds, with guys who help me entertain people.
“I will not take punishment until I can’t walk or talk. Manny had a great career but boxing retired Manny, Manny didn’t retire from boxing. There is a difference. Of course, if I were Manny Pacquiao, would I be attending an exhibition with Floyd Mayweather to get a payday? I absolutely will. But this time, I like to fight guys who are 15-0, 8-0. I will continue to do what I do and direct and control.
But it’s not just about not taking big risks on legal risks in the ring. Mayweather isn’t afraid to admit that he’s not the same fighter he was when he was younger.
While Mayweather still looks sharp and dominant in exhibition bouts, he knows his high-level boxing days are over. He sees this part of his job as fun, not a competition.
“That’s the thing – excitement and people getting a chance to just see my perspective,” Mayweather said. “As much as I say, I know I’m not what I once was. I’m not ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd or ‘Money’ Mayweather. But I can still go out and entertain the crowd.
