EEven though the WNBA is the largest women’s basketball league in the world, there is still a huge compensation gap between NBA athletes and WNBA stars. Specifically, male athletes earn an average of 41 times more than WNBA players.
Female professionals should also find a different approach to compensate for this and show their efforts. As a result, they play frequently in the off-season. And one such player is one of the WNBA’s brightest stars, Brittany Griner.
Griner represents UMMC Ekaterinburg in basketball in Russia. The eight-time All-Star spent seven seasons with the team. As she prepares to play for the franchise, she runs into trouble.
Griner was arrested at a Russian airport earlier this year for bringing unlicensed cartridges of cannabis oil into the country. The Phoenix Mercury Center went through a lengthy trial after her initial arrest. The result shocked the basketball community as Russia jailed the WNBA star for nine years.
Gilbert Arenas, however, asserted that there may be an additional reason for Griner’s arrest. In particular, he believes that he is persuading Russia to join their side.
Gilbert Arenas’ theories about Brittany Greener’s arrest
Brittany Griner may be more important to the Russian league than the WNBA, says the former NBA All-Star. Arenas compared her plight to that of world-renowned basketball legend Stephen Marbury.
Arenas believes Griner has the same potential as the former NBA star who starred in Beijing, and believes Griner’s nine-year prison sentence may not end.
“This isn’t the first time that Gore has been arrested in Russia. Let’s say she’s the queen of Russia. So she gets what she wants,” Arenas said.
Agent Zero Dove continued: “Vape pens and things like that, you take that from country to country, state to state, city to city. So for them to raise you, they already know what you have on you. So if we could get these two players it would be more of a trap and I’m one of those people who says ‘I don’t believe you’.
UMMC Ekaterinburg player Brittany Griner is currently the champion in Russia. Except for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, the franchise is loaded with WNBA talent. WNBA All-Stars Breanna Stewart and Courtney Vandersloot are two examples of players who have played with Griner on the court.
Griner was a Russian celebrity who made more money than her WNBA salary. Specifically, Griner earned $221,450 during the 2021 WNBA season.
However, she received a $1 million pay check for her winter trip to Russia. Griner was earning more than four times her base salary for buying Russia.
