India is on the brink of elimination after losing to Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the Super 4 stage in the 2022 Asia Cup after a top-flight performance from Team India. India will now have to rely on the results of other teams to qualify for the finals. On Tuesday, India captain Rohit Sharma’s impressive 41-ball 72 was left in vain as Sri Lanka chased down 174 from 12 balls, needing 21 off 12 balls, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar scoring 14 runs. Almost publishing for their benefit. If Pakistan beat Afghanistan on Wednesday, India will be out of the tournament.
Momin Saqib, popularly known as ‘Maro Mujhe Maro’ Guy, was present at the stadium during the India vs Sri Lanka match. And he made an interesting reel on the Indian show. “India is in a difficult situation. Sri Lanka batsmen are doing well and are close to victory. Hopes of India-Pakistan final are sinking. This is a scam,” he is heard saying in the video.
Chasing what looked like a tie at the break, the Sri Lankans got off to a good start with openers Kusal Mendis (57 off 37 balls) and Pathum Nissanka (52 off 37 balls) scoring 91 runs. The Fifties are ranked sixth. Both batsmen found the gaps and boundaries with regular ease, countering the positive approach adopted by the two Lankan batsmen, putting a lot of pressure on the Indian bowling attack.
But leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal had other ideas as he struck twice in the 12th over to put the brakes on Sri Lanka’s march.
Ravichandran Ashwin sent back Dhanushka Gunathilakan (1) at a difficult position to leave Sri Lanka at 110 for three in the 14th over.
On the very first ball of the next over, Sri Lanka suffered a blow to the body when Chahal found the big wicket of Mendis, who was caught lbw in front of the wicket.
But Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka (33 not out) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (25 not out) stayed on till the end as their team won the match by 64 runs to complete the fifth wicket partnership.
