NEW YORK (AP) — The trade market got busy before Tuesday’s deadline, when the New York Yankees acquired pitcher Frankie Montas from Oakland for four prospects.
With the rivals looking to stretch runs and the postseason, San Diego acquired closer Josh Hader from Milwaukee on Monday, and Houston acquired first baseman Trey Mancini from Baltimore as part of a three-team trade that included Tampa Bay.
World Series champion Atlanta brought back infielder Ehire Adrianza from Washington, the Yankees acquired reliever Scott Efros from the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox acquired left-hander Jake Diekman from Boston.
After Seattle acquired Luis Castillo from Cincinnati, Montas became the second front-line starter to switch teams before the deadline. To replace 29-year-old right-hander and slugger Lo Trivino, Oakland sent 26-year-old rookie left-hander JP Sears, 26, along with three minor leaguers: 24-year-old lefty Ken Waldychuk, 23-year-old right-hander Luis Medina and 22-year-old infielder Cooper Bowman. .
Montas is 4-9 with a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts, including a 2.76 ERA since early May. He has 109 strikeouts and 28 walks in 104 2/3 innings.
“His skill level, especially how he’s stepped up the last two years, I’m excited to get him in the mix,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s got all the equipment and materials you need in a rolling man. Over the last couple of years he’s proven to be that caliber of pitcher.
Hader went to the Padres for shortstop Taylor Rogers, right-hander Dinelson Lamet, outfielder Esteri Ruiz and pitching prospect Robert Gasser. Hader has 29 saves, while Rodgers has 28, even though the Padres recently removed Rodgers after opening up opportunities in the Detroit series. The Padres acquired Rodgers from Minnesota on Opening Day.
“Josh Hader is one of the best closers in the league,” Padres general manager AJ Preller said. “Been there, done that, pitched in big places, big playoffs. He has mastered things.
Houston acquired Mancini in a trade that sent speedy outfielder Jose Siri to the Rays. The Astros acquired right-hander Jayden Murray from Tampa Bay, while the Orioles received right-hander Chayce McDermott.
The AL West-leading Astros were in the market for a first baseman as they struggled with Yuli Gurriel. Mancini, 30, is hitting .268 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 92 games.
“Trey has been a big part of our lives since I’ve been here and he’s a big part of Baltimore and a big part of this community,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “And you know it’s hard to see someone like him walk away from being just a close friend to so many people.”
