By mid-July, there was a rapid build-up in the rumor mill that free agent Nazeem Kadri and the NY Islanders had agreed to a contract before GM Lou Lamoriello had yet to announce it. Things seem a little quieter after Frank Serravalli told DFO Rundown that, while he’s heard the rumors himself, he believes it’s “premature” to know if Kadri and the Islanders are done in Lamoriello’s top drawer. In recent history, there are new reports suggesting that Kadri and the Islanders could be finalized soon, possibly this week.
Longtime hockey reporter John Shannon recently joined the Seckers and Price podcast and says it’s on good authority that Kadri and the Islanders will make things public soon.
“I think (Kadri) ends up with the New York Islanders … I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends this week … Lue has to move some money … I’m getting it from a very good source. It’s going to happen very soon.”
– John Shannon
Earlier in this report, fourth-rounder David Pagnotta reported that Kadri and the Islanders had agreed to a deal in the 7×7 zone, saying it was just a matter of “when,” not “when.” Lamoriello, caught up in the deal, is trying to figure out how to make money with the Islanders owning $12 million less than the salary cap and needing to lock in deals for restricted free agents Noah Dobson, Alexander Romanov and Kieffer Bellows.
Shannon wasn’t the only one to report that they had heard Kadri and that the islanders had been announced recently. In the latest DFO Rundown, Jason Gregor reported hearing something similar from Shannon:
“I’ve talked to two opposing GMs who believe (Kadri) is signing with the Isles. If you go back to last year, Kyle Palmieri and Anthony Beauvillier signed on Sept. 1.”
– Jason Gregor
Gregor said he would not be surprised if this was similar to Lamoriello’s signings last summer, which were announced on the first day of September. What he did say though is that he would be surprised if the rumored 7×7 deal was signed.
Kadri may have realized at this point that he wasn’t going to bring in the $9 million AAV he wanted in free agency. That’s good news for the Isles even if they sign him long term. However, at an AAV of around $7 million, Smoke has a lot of heat for him, so it wouldn’t be surprising if that’s what Kadri signs.
The issue at this point hinges on Kadri signing with the Isles and none other than Lamoriello. Once we learn how to get money off the books, the rest of the dominoes fall. By mid-August, we almost have no choice but to find out sooner rather than later.
