The winger is the top scorer and they are heading to the playoffs against the formidable Suns. And while Arik Ogunbowale’s absence spells defeat for Dallas, our WNBA bet still picks him as an over — find out why.
The Connecticut Sun are entering Game 1 against the Dallas Wings with a sense of urgency and a real sense that this could finally be their year. Over the past 24 seasons, the Suns had a 55.8 winning percentage — second best in the WNBA — with zero rings to show for it.
They go into today’s Thursday August 18 opener as heavy favorites against the Wings – who have won two of their three meetings this season, but are missing their team’s most valuable player in Arik Ogunbowale. See why Dallas can’t sleep, but Connecticut needs to do business in our Wings with Suns picks and predictions.

This matchup is very interesting, and while Connecticut is the favorite here, Dallas should not be overlooked in the big margin. The new playoff format of the first round makes an upset even more likely. The first round is a series of more than three games, the first two games are hosted by the higher seed, and the third game can be played at the home of the lower team. Talk about pressure.
In short, if Dallas wins in games 1 and 2, they will host the deciding game in front of their fans. Connecticut will come out swinging, looking to avoid a potential Game 3, but it won’t be easy. Dallas has been impressive, going 7-3 in its last 10 games. Among those wins were a pair of impressive W’s against the Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces – arguably the two best teams in the WNBA.
That said, with leading scorer Arik Ogunbowale going down with a recent injury, an absolute shocker to their team, Dallas will struggle to beat Connecticut in this series. Her timeline doesn’t define her in this series, she’s averaging 19.7 points per game (fourth in the league).
Connecticut is one of the best teams this season (first by regular season net rating) and even if Dallas wins the season series (due to various important factors), this is the playoffs, and the Suns know they need a consistent A-. Game. At worst, the Wings are dealing with so many injuries that they can’t compete.
Prediction: Suns -9.5 (-110 on PointsBet)
Basketball betting covers analysis.
While Dallas has had success in the Suns this season, it’s a struggle to find what they do best from game-to-game. Connecticut is an offensive juggernaut, top 3 in points, field goal percentage, three-point percentage and offensive rating.
The Suns have had plenty of success with their balanced attack, with five different players averaging double-digit points – meaning they have plenty of ways to burn you and no clear focal point on defense – making it tough to cover them all. night. Jonkel Jones is the reigning MVP, but this year she has taken on a lot of the burden, with many players who can increase the results.
The Wings have done well without Ogunbowale and will look to build on Marina Mabrey, who has entered the tournament. The 5-foot-11 guard has been stellar in double-figure scoring in the past seven games, including a 31-point outburst in the win over the New York Liberty.
Mabry knows how to score, and while the Suns have a top-3 defensive rating, she scored 20 points on 60% shooting earlier this season. I believe, even without Ogunbowale, the points will come in abundance here.
Prediction: Over 163.5 (-110 by PointsBet)
Most people shy away from betting against Connecticut’s fearsome defense, but the first playoff game always offers plenty of surprises—just look at last night’s Liberty vs. Sky game.
Dallas shouldn’t win, but I don’t think we’re in for a low-scoring matchup. With Ogunbowale out, many may wonder if Dallas can score enough goals. In her absence, they beat the Sky and Aces, scoring 83 points a game.
When the center of offense is removed from the puzzle, it can confuse the opponent on how to game plan. Look for Mabray to continue her hot streak and help push this game with Ogunbowale generally sitting and under pressure.
Pick: Over 163.5 (-110 on PointsBet)
